The Talking drum is an hourglass-shaped drum from West Africa, whose pitch can be regulated to mimic the tone and prosody of human speech. The tones created by this drum can be altered by squeezing the rope that affixes both heads to the drum lined vertically along the body. The use of talking drums as a form of communication was noticed by Europeans in the first half of the 18th century. Using low tones referred to as male and higher female tones, the drummer communicated through the phrase and pauses which could travel upwards of 4 to 5 miles.
IQ Plus’ adaptation of the traditional Talking Drum is ideally used to play together as part of a percussion ensemble. It can be used as an interactive instrument for classroom activities by children of all ages. They will enjoy playing this instrument and learning how different sounds can be created by experimenting with squeezing the rope and then releasing the tension. The Talking Drum can also be used to foster teamwork and cooperation amongst children. They will learn how simple it is for one person to play a pattern and the process of relating one pattern to another, played by someone else. Children will learn to work as a team, and there will be mutual joy and harmony!
